Awarding Badges in Badgr

How to award badges to an individual or to a group, revoke badge awards, and remove a badge from your issuer.

Manually awarding a single badge

Manually awarded badges from Badgr.com do not appear in the Badgr for Canvas LTI app. Visit our Bulk Award section for more information about awarding badges to groups of recipients

Once a badge has been awarded, its data is baked and unchangeable. If you are made aware of a necessary change to a badge after it has been awarded to an individual (such as an error in the spelling of a name), you can make this change by first revoking the badge, and then awarding it again with the correct data.

  1. Login into Badgr.com and select the Issuers tab from the navigation bar at the top of the screen.
  2. Select the issuer of the badge you would like to award.
  3. Select the Badge you would like to award.
  4. Select Award Badge.

Optionally Including a Narrative or Evidence with a Badge Award

Learn more about using Evidence in Open Badges

Narrative text supports Markdown and may consist of personalized information about the award including a writing sample or other reference, or observations/commentary supplied by the issuer. Evidence URLs are typically linked to learning artifacts. These links could go to a published article, a YouTube video, or an online project or photo gallery.

Follow the above instructions to get to the badge award page. Enter the recipient's information as described above.
  1. For the overall Narrative, you may use Markdown formatting to add more information to the badge.
  2. For Evidence Items, each may include an external URL, a narrative, or both. The narrative of each item often is used to describe what is found at the URL so a badge consumer understands what the content is before viewing.
  3. Enter information into the appropriate field(s).
  4. There is one overall Narrative and as many Evidence items as you wish.
  5. Select the Award Badge button to finish the process and award the badge.

View the awarded badge

  2. Find the badge under Issuer Badges, then select the badge you wish to view.
  3. Select the Awards tab below the badge.
  4. To view all recipients select Include Revoked and Expired Badges boxes.

Awarding badges to a group of recipients (in bulk)

Badgr allows program administrators to award badges (in bulk) to a group of recipients. You may include optional metadata such as evidence and narrative to the badge(s) that may the same or specific to each user.
The first step to awarding a badge in bulk is to upload the list of recipients, then awarding the badge.

Prerequisite: You have created an Issuer and badges in Badgr (see Creating an issuer profile & Creating badges as an issuer).

Badgr Pro subscribers have unlimited bulk awards. If you are using the free version, you are limited to 50 awards per CSV file.

Manual or bulk awarded badges won't appear in the Badgr for Canvas LTI unless you have purchased a Badgr Pro Subscription (see Tracking Externally Awarded Badges).

Once a badge has been awarded, its data is baked and unchangeable. If you are made aware of a necessary change to a badge after it has been awarded to an individual (such as an error in the spelling of a name), you can make this change by first revoking the badge, and then awarding it again with the correct data.

  3. Select the badge you wish to award. You may also issue a badge to an individual from here.
  4. Select the Bulk Award from CSV button.

Revoking Badges in Badgr

Occasionally, badges must be revoked. Badgr allows this functionality from the badge detail page where the list of recipients is shown. Revoking a badge makes it so that recipients are unable to verify the badge any longer.
  1. Click the ISSUERS tab.
  2. Select the issuer of the badge you wish to revoke.
  3. From the list of badges, select the badge you wish to revoke.
  4. Select the "Awards" tab.
  5. Click the ellipsis next to the user you wish to revoke the badge from.
  6. Click the revoke button and confirm to prevent this recipient from verifying this badge in the future.revoke_badge

Revoking a badge in the Badgr app in Canvas

Sometimes a teacher discovers that a badge awarded automatically for module completion needs to be revoked. Perhaps a student broke the plagiarism code of conduct. Badgr allows teachers to revoke badges in cases such as these.

  1. Log into Canvas and navigate to the course where you are a teacher.
  2. Alter the student's grade or condition that triggered module completion for the relevant badge so it is not automatically re-awarded to them after you revoke it.
  3. Navigate to Badgr via the Badges item in the left-side course navigation menu.
  4. Click the Progress tab in the Badgr app.
  5. Find the page where the student in question appears or search for the student by name with the search box.
  6. For a particular student, click the badge you wish to revoke to open the detail dialog.
  7. Click Revoke Badge.

  1. To delete a badge that has already been awarded, you will first need to revoke the badge from each recipient that it was awarded to. See Revoking badges
  2. To delete a badge that has not yet been awarded click DELETE in the right side column.
